Trove of Terror: A Shark Arcana Dropped and the Whole Market Jumped Off the Cliff

Okay. Deep breath. 🦈

On October 6, 2026 Valve dropped the Trove of Terror, a treasure chest full of eldritch item sets, and inside it the thing I have wanted since I first got pulled into a Ravage: a Tidehunter arcana. It is called Maw of the Megalodon, it turns Tide into a megalodon with a skeleton dangling from his fishing line, and it is the first brand-new arcana since the Crownfall pair in April 2024.

I should have been happy for one full day. I was happy for about four hours. Then I opened the market tab. 📉

What happened on October 7

Every single tradable arcana I track had a bad Tuesday. Here is the full board, Steam Market price the day before the Trove and the day after:

Read that “Sales” column again. 610 arcanas sold on Steam on October 6. 4,388 sold on October 7. That is not a market, that is a fountain dive with the whole team. The Resurrection of Shen alone went from 85 sales to 694 in a day and lost -26.0%. The Magus Cypher got hit hardest at -33.8%.

Why? I cannot read minds, but I can read inventories: a new treasure with a 0.001% Ultra Rare drop means a lot of people suddenly needed Steam wallet money, fast. And what sells fast at a discount? Arcanas. So thousands of them went on the market at once, and the price did what prices do when 4,388 copies hit at the same time.

The shark itself

A few facts, so you do not have to dig:

• Released: October 6, 2026, inside the Trove of Terror. Valve calls it an all-new model with custom animations, effects, taunts and voice lines, plus three styles you unlock by playing it.
• How you get it: Trove of Terror treasure drop, Ultra Rare tier (reported initial odds 0.001%, guaranteed Ultra Rare on the 50th opening without one; keengamer). In plain words: open chests and pray, or open 50 and get it guaranteed.
• Can you trade it? Reports say no, the treasure items are not marketable. There is not a single listing on Steam as I write this, so for now Maw of the Megalodon sits in the Dota2Arcana Rank at #17 of 25, placed by Tidehunter’s pick rate, because there is nothing to sell.
• Drow fans, good news: the same treasure brings back Dread Retribution inside the Ultra Rare “Sepulchral Stalker” bundle. First time since the 2021 Battle Pass. It sits at #13 in the ranking, same deal, no market.

So the one arcana everybody wants this week is the one you cannot buy, while the 18 you can buy just got cheaper. Peak Dota logic. 🤷

Is this the time to buy?

Here is where I have to say it: at your own risk. I am a guy with a hoodie and a spreadsheet, not your financial advisor.

But look at the pattern. Demon Eater was $20.73 on October 6, dropped to $15.23 on the 7th, and is at $16.21 as of October 9, 2026. The Resurrection of Shen: $17.84 → $13.20 → $13.75. The dump happened in one day and the first bounce came the day after. If you were waiting for a cheap entry on an arcana you actually play, this week handed you one. (Only Fractal Horns of Inner Abysm and Blades of Voth Domosh went up through all of this, because of course they did.)

The Arcana Hype Meter is at 0 right now: 1 of 18 arcanas up over 30 days, average move -18.2%. That is as cold as the scale goes. Whether it bounces from here or keeps sinking, nobody knows, least of all me. 🙈

What I would do instead of buying blind: set a price alert on the arcana you actually want, a few dollars under today’s price. If the market keeps dumping to feed the shark, the alert catches it. If it bounces, you lost nothing but a mail.

What I am watching next

1. Does the shark hit the market? If Valve ever lets Trove items trade, the first listings will be wild. The arcana page updates the moment a listing appears.
2. Sales volume. 4,388 in a day is panic. When the daily number is back near 610, the dump is over.
3. The Hype Meter. Anything above 20 and I start believing in things again.
